Less searching for like minded people. More noticing the ones already crossing your path.
Earth - Saturday March 11th, 2023 — Punta is a first-of-its-kind community built by digital nomads for digital nomads who have a proclivity for traversing other parts of the planet for prolonged periods of time, if not perpetually.
There are an estimated 35 million digital nomads wandering around the world right now, and by 2025, surveys suggest that some 36.2 million Americans will be working remotely. Beget by basic human wanderlust and further fueled by an unprecedented pandemic that has, amidst tough times, inspired a new normal, digital nomadism is unmistakenly on the rise.
Already, eight in 10 people in the U.S. alone are working in remote or at least in hybrid positions, while only two in 10 are entirely on-site. It’s estimated that more than 70 million U.S. workers could theoretically do their jobs from afar, and countries across the world are gearing up with novel digital nomad visas to welcome them—from Estonia and Croatia, to Portugal and Spain, to Brazil, Mexico and more.
Hotels have also adjusted their offerings for longstay guests with work-friendly features, and RV rentals and campervan sales have skyrocketed while the laptop-toting adventurers who prefer accommodation on wheels continue to hit the road. After all, the economic value of the global digital nomad community sits at a cool $787 billion per year.
It makes sense that, with millions of digital nomads and billions of dollars, industries across the board are adapting. But it hasn’t made sense to Punta founder, Damia Fuentes, and his team of four more nomads,, why nomad apps have not. While the tech industry has been short-circuited by immense innovation in recent years, the dating and lifestyle sectors, somehow, have not kept apace. There’s not a single app solution that meets the needs of modern digital nomads.
“I can’t believe that no one has taken the lead on building a mobile app for digital nomads,” says Fuentes, a mobile and backend engineer with seven years of experience working from more than 20 countries and counting. “There are options out there, but no app is professional enough to be a tool that every nomad needs to use.”
Punta is a place—a meeting point—for like minded, location-independent professionals to meet. Instead of searching the far reaches of the globe or digging into the depths of traditional meetup and dating apps, Punta shows users who are already crossing their paths and on their wavelengths both professionally and personally.
You could say it’s sorta like engineering serendipity.
No more wasting coveted time swiping, searching for meetup groups with like minded individuals or waiting for a match. Punta does the digging for users, so they can spend their coveted time learning that language, finishing that van build, sipping more coconuts at sunset or starting that startup from some salt flats somewhere.
Users only need to create a profile, share their travel plans and make meaningful connections. They can check out who is traveling to the same places during the same dates, as well as who shares their common interests. So they can connect in Costa Rica over surfing, meet up in Mexico for a taco tour or, say, summit Kilimanjaro together if they want to keep it casual.
“We’re confident that Punta will become a go-to resource for digital nomads looking for travel partners” Fuentes says, adding that the Punta team understands digital nomads’ needs because they know them firsthand. “From the very beginning, we’re seeking feedback from our users so that we build the perfect product for the digital nomad community. We aim to be the first player in the market that is able to fully satisfy all the needs that digital nomads have.”
Collectively, the Punta team has traversed over 100 countries and counting with over a decade of globetrotting. That firsthand experience—coupled with the app’s sophisticated matching mechanisms for a simple and seamless user experience—is why Punta is already gaining steam. Led by Damia, the team consists of five nomads: Carles, Adria, AnnaMarie and Guillem. Each an expert in their field with years of experience, they cover mobile, backend, web, dev ops, copywriting, data science and finance. Together, they make up a team that’s ready to take over the digital nomad market. Although they have built Punta using their free time, they are motivated to succeed and make Punta a full-time endeavor. To help grow the Punta community, the team is speaking with potential partners and inviting discussions surrounding investment opportunities.
